He gave me a rainbow plastic ring
he'd found on the ground
and I thought it meant yes
but I was wrong.
I fell for him anyway
and discovered, to my surprise,
that I could live
in his no thank you world
and still love myself
for all he didn’t love me back.
Sometimes
the gift of no
lies in the opportunity
to say yes anyway.
